Google has improved its Pirate Update algorithm, designed to combat pirated content in search results.
To do so, the developers had to:
- develop a new signal;
- hijack user redirection schemes to other domains.
The company said that:
- A "Downlink signal" for Google Search has been developed. Sites that receive many valid content removal requests are shown lower in search results.
- Copyright infringing sites are now harder to evade demotion by redirecting people to a new domain.
- Added "Pre-release" checkbox for DMCA notifications regarding this category of content. The purpose is to strengthen the demotion signal in search results.
Based on a submission to the US Copyright Office: Re: its Pirate algorithm, Google has made it harder for infringing sites to evade demotion by redirecting to a new domain. When a site is demoted, traffic Google sends drops by 89% on avg https://t.co/RNrbilXifg via @torrentfreak pic.twitter.com/aRy7AEr3ww
