On August 7, 2025, OpenAI officially unveiled ChatGPT-5, its most capable AI model to date. The new release is now available in the ChatGPT web app, iOS and Android apps, as well as via API, Microsoft Copilot, and Team, Enterprise, and Education plans.

GPT-5 combines speed and deep reasoning into a single unified model. It can determine when to provide a quick response and when to engage a more thorough “thinking” process for complex prompts. The model delivers state-of-the-art performance in coding, math, creative writing, visual analysis, and healthcare-related queries.

Notable improvements include reduced hallucinations, more truthful answers, and a “safe completions” system that gives careful, substantive responses instead of outright refusals in sensitive cases. GPT-5 also shows less sycophancy and offers customizable interaction styles with four preset personalities: Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd.

How GPT-5 differs from GPT-4o:

  • Unified model with intelligent routing — GPT-4o required choosing specific modes or models for speed vs. depth.
  • Improved long-term memory — better context retention over extended conversations.
  • Higher factual accuracy — significant reduction in hallucinations compared to GPT-4o.
  • Better instruction following — adapts faster to the user’s tone, style, and formatting requirements.
  • Faster complex reasoning — GPT-4o could slow down in heavy math or logic tasks.
  • New personalization options — four personalities were not available in GPT-4o.
  • Expanded visual capabilities — more accurate image understanding and integration of text+visual analysis.

Availability:

  • Free users: GPT-5 is available but reverts to GPT-5 mini after usage limits.
  • ChatGPT Plus: GPT-5 as the default model with higher quotas.
  • ChatGPT Pro: unlimited GPT-5 and GPT-5 Pro access for maximum depth and accuracy.
  • Team, Enterprise, Edu: GPT-5 available now, GPT-5 Pro rolling out next week.
