During his time for webmasters, Google employee John Mueller shared how Page Experience signals work – including on desktops. He gave examples of situations where page usability might matter more, and when its impact might be diminished.

Mueller explained that:

  1. The impact of Page Experience can diminish when a user expects to see a particular site in search results.
  2. This signal is especially useful when there are multiple sites with similar answers. Then it helps select the best option based on user experience (assuming the content is about the same level).
  3. On desktops, the Page Experience update didn't cause major changes in ranking.
  4. Core Web Vitals does not cause major shifts, but may cause small changes in ranking.
