The number of Featured Snippets in Google search results continues to decline

This was found by Kevin Indig, SEO director at Shopify, who analyzed a sample of more than 10,000 keywords and the percentage of search features displayed for those keywords on desktops and mobile devices.

On Jan. 24, 2022, he published the results. In his analysis, he used data from June 2018 to June 2021 provided by the SERP Rank Ranger monitoring tool.

The results showed that:

  1. The number of highlighted descriptions in the output is decreasing and the number of blocks with similar queries (People also ask) is increasing. This shift began in March 2020 and is seen on both desktops and mobile devices.
  2. Blocks with similar queries appear in SERPs 10 times more often than highlighted descriptions: 65% vs. 6% as of June 2021.
